THE Sunshine State finds itself in a state of flux when it comes to gambling, with Florida opening its doors to sports betting before closing them again pretty quickly soon afterwards.
The Hard Rock sportsbook app was launched in November last year by the Seminole tribe who operate the Hard Rock casinos in the state, before being discontinued a month later. The Seminoles were unhappy at a judge ruling the compact – legal agreement – between the tribe and the state is vacated, in effect scrapping the deal giving them control over Florida sports betting in return for an agreed minimum financial return to the state.
The outcome is that there are now no legal sports betting apps operating in Florida, and while there is legislation in place for a number of casinos to run a sportsbook at their premises, how exactly those sportsbooks will operate is being held up due to legal wranglings. In the meantime, there is still horse race betting available, along with a state lottery and Daily Fantasy Sports events.
Florida Betting
Online and land-based sports betting is legal in the state but at present no apps exist for gamblers to use on their phones, and no sportsbooks are being operated out of the tribal casinos. There is expected to be moves to bring further legislation in later this year.
