PredictIt Promo Code, Fees and the $3,500 Contract Limit

By American.Bet TeamUpdated Oct 31, 2026

PredictIt is the original U.S. political prediction market, a research-driven platform where, since 2014, traders have bought and sold shares on elections, nominations and policy outcomes. It predates the current boom by a decade, and it survives on an unusual legal footing: not a full exchange like Kalshi, but a not-for-profit project operating under CFTC no-action relief. This review covers how it works, its fees and limits, and the legal status that makes it both unique and precarious.

Who can tradeU.S. citizens

Yes, through a narrow path. PredictIt launched on November 3, 2014 under a CFTC no-action letter issued to New Zealand’s Victoria University of Wellington for academic research, with Washington, D.C.-based Aristotle, Inc. running day-to-day operations. That relief capped each question at 5,000 traders and $850 per person, limits modeled on the Iowa Electronic Markets.

On August 4, 2022, the CFTC withdrew the letter, saying the university had not operated PredictIt within its terms, and ordered positions closed by February 15, 2023. PredictIt and Aristotle sued in federal court in Texas in September 2022, and on January 26, 2023 the Fifth Circuit granted an injunction that kept the market running.

In July 2025 PredictIt won the case. A new agreement with the CFTC raised the per-contract cap from $850 to $3,500 and removed the 5,000-trader limit per market. So PredictIt is legal for U.S. citizens, but it operates under staff no-action relief, not a full exchange license, which is a meaningful distinction from Kalshi.

Is there a PredictIt promo code or bonus?

No. As a not-for-profit research market, PredictIt has never offered a welcome bonus or promo code. Anyone advertising a “PredictIt bonus code” is not describing a real offer.

How to use PredictIt

  • Sign up at PredictIt and complete identity verification.
  • Deposit funds.
  • Pick a market, such as a Senate confirmation or an election outcome.
  • Buy Yes or No shares priced 1¢ to 99¢; a correct share pays $1.00 at resolution.
  • Trade or hold. You can sell before resolution, subject to the per-contract limit.

What you can trade

PredictIt is built around politics: presidential and congressional races, party nominations, control of the House and Senate, confirmations and similar policy events, plus some financial questions. In election years, House and Senate control markets are its signature contracts. Its prices are widely cited as a sentiment gauge, though its limits make it a tool better suited to researchers and political enthusiasts than high-volume traders.

Contracts are binary, for example “Will the Senate confirm Nominee X by a set date?”, and resolve to $1.00 for the correct side.

PredictIt fees and limits

PredictIt is expensive by modern exchange standards. It takes 10% of the profit on each winning trade (earnings above your original investment) and charges 5% on withdrawals. The $3,500 cap per contract keeps positions small. Those costs are the price of its research structure, and they are a big reason high-volume traders have moved to Kalshi and Polymarket.

How PredictIt compares

  • vs Kalshi: Kalshi is a fully CFTC-regulated exchange with lower fees and far broader markets, including sports. PredictIt is politics-led, capped and higher-fee, but with a long track record. See our Kalshi review.
  • vs Polymarket: Polymarket offers deeper political liquidity and lower costs; PredictIt is dollar-based and U.S.-only.
  • vs the sportsbook apps: DraftKings, FanDuel and Robinhood event markets are sports- and finance-led. PredictIt doesn’t do sports at all, which also keeps it out of the state lawsuits over sports contracts.

Who operates PredictIt?

PredictIt was created by John Aristotle Phillips with Victoria University of Wellington. Operations sit with Aristotle, Inc., Phillips’s political software company in Washington, D.C., and the not-for-profit Prediction Market Research Consortium is the body behind the project. In September 2025, PredictIt received approval to operate as a regulated derivatives exchange with its own clearinghouse, which could widen its role beyond the original research market over time.

Customer support

PredictIt provides email-based customer support and a help center covering deposits, withdrawals, market rules and verification. There is no published customer-service phone line.

Responsible trading

Trading carries risk of loss. Set limits before you start. If it stops being fun, call 1-800-GAMBLER or visit GambleAware.org, and for crisis support call or text 988. See our responsible gambling guide.

PredictIt and political prediction markets in 2027

After the midterms

The November 2026 midterms are PredictIt’s biggest event since 2024. Once they settle, attention shifts to early 2028 presidential nomination markets.

Exchange status

PredictIt’s September 2025 approval to run a regulated exchange and clearinghouse gives it a path beyond no-action relief. Watch how much of the platform moves onto that structure.

CFTC rulemaking

The CFTC’s June and October 2026 proposals on event contracts cover political markets as well as sports. Final rules will set the ground rules PredictIt competes under.
