Polymarket is the biggest name in crypto-native prediction markets and, after more than three years locked out of the United States, it is back. The platform built its reputation on the 2024 election cycle as a real-time “truth machine,” then spent 2025 buying its way to a regulated U.S. return. It now runs two separate operations: a long-standing international exchange (USDC-settled, built on blockchain) and a newer, CFTC-regulated U.S. platform, Polymarket US, that opened to American traders in stages. This review covers the U.S. product.

Is Polymarket legal in the US, and where can you use it?
Yes, with caveats. Polymarket was forced out of the U.S. in 2022, when the CFTC fined it $1.4 million for running an unregistered derivatives venue and ordered it to block American users. Its route back was to buy a license: in July 2025 it acquired QCEX (also called QCX), a CFTC-licensed exchange and clearinghouse, giving it the same regulatory structure rival Kalshi uses.
The U.S. platform relaunched in December 2025 as an invite-only, sports-first app. On May 12, 2026 Polymarket dropped the waitlist and opened its iOS app to U.S. users, and it is now on Android as well. The U.S. exchange (QCX LLC, doing business as Polymarket US) is a separate entity from the international platform, with its own markets, liquidity and fees. The international website is not available for U.S. trading.
Because it is a CFTC-regulated venue rather than a state-licensed sportsbook, Polymarket US treats itself as available nationwide to anyone 18+. In practice, its map is shrinking at the edges as states push back:
- Nevada: Polymarket geo-blocks Nevada after a Nevada Gaming Control Board civil enforcement action. In May 2026 the Ninth Circuit sent the Nevada and Washington cases against Kalshi and Polymarket back to state court, rejecting Polymarket’s argument that CFTC compliance made it a federal officer.
- Michigan: New sports trades were blocked from late October 2026. Existing sports positions can be closed, and non-sports markets remain.
- Ohio: The Ohio Casino Control Commission sent cease-and-desist letters to prediction-market operators, including Polymarket, on October 2, 2026, demanding a halt to Ohio sports contracts. QCX sued Ohio officials in federal court on October 16, 2026.
- Kentucky: Kentucky sued Polymarket entities in state court on June 17, 2026. A federal magistrate judge recommended in October 2026 that the case go back to state court.
- Connecticut: The state’s gaming division sent Polymarket a cease-and-desist letter in December 2025, alleging illegal sports betting and sports contracts offered to users under 21.
- Missouri: The attorney general told Polymarket (via QCX) and other exchanges in September 2026 to follow state licensing, tax and age rules or stop sports contracts.
Market availability can differ by state and change quickly, so the app is the final word on what’s live where you are.
Is there a Polymarket promo code or welcome bonus?
Polymarket’s international platform has never used welcome bonuses. The U.S. app has run new-user trading credits, and the amount and terms change. Credits generally can’t be withdrawn on their own and must be used to trade. Check the app for the current offer and full terms.
How to use Polymarket US
- Download the app on iOS or Android, create an account and complete identity verification (18+).
- Fund your account. Options in the app include debit card, bank transfer and wire, with other methods such as PayPal shown in some versions. You can also transfer USDC.
- Pick a market. Browse Sports, Politics, Economics, Crypto and Culture.
- Buy Yes or No. Prices run 1¢ to 99¢ and equal the implied probability; winning contracts resolve to $1.00.
- Hold or sell. Exit any time the market is liquid, or hold to resolution.
Fees on Polymarket US
Polymarket US charges takers a fee based on the contract price, highest near 50¢ and lowest near the extremes. At a 50¢ price the fee works out to roughly $1.74 per 100 contracts. Makers, who post resting orders, pay no fee and may earn a rebate. Some funding methods carry their own fees.
What you can trade
Polymarket is known for the breadth and speed of its markets, especially politics and breaking news, and for deep liquidity on marquee events. Typical categories include election and policy outcomes, Fed and economic data, sports results, crypto price thresholds, and awards or pop-culture events. On the U.S. app, sports came first, and parlays were added in August 2026, with availability varying by state. Prices move constantly with trader sentiment.
How Polymarket compares
- vs Kalshi: Both are now CFTC-regulated U.S. exchanges, and both face the same state fights over sports. Kalshi has been continuously available to U.S. users since 2021 and has the longer list of court rulings; Polymarket US is newer. See our Kalshi review.
- vs Robinhood, DraftKings and FanDuel: those put event contracts inside mainstream apps and are easier for beginners; Polymarket offers a wider, faster-moving market menu.
- vs PredictIt: PredictIt is politics-focused with position caps; Polymarket is a full multi-category exchange.
Who owns Polymarket?
Polymarket is run by Blockratize Inc., with the U.S. business operating as QCX LLC. It was founded in 2020 by Shayne Coplan, who remains CEO. Backers include Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. In October 2025, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, agreed to invest up to $2 billion, and in April 2026 the company was reported to be raising new funding at a valuation of around $15 billion.
Customer support
Support is handled through the in-app help center and email, backed by an active community on Discord and X. As with most prediction-market apps, there is no published customer-service phone line.
Responsible trading
Trading event contracts carries risk of loss, and sports contracts work much like bets. Set limits before you start. If it stops being fun, call 1-800-GAMBLER or visit GambleAware.org, and for crisis support call or text 988. See our responsible gambling guide.
Polymarket and prediction markets in 2027
The Ohio lawsuit
QCX’s federal suit against Ohio regulators, filed October 16, 2026, has been linked to Kalshi’s Ohio case, where the Sixth Circuit sided with the state in September 2026. The outcome decides whether Polymarket US can keep offering sports in Ohio.
Final CFTC rules
The CFTC proposed in October 2026 to define event contracts on sports, politics, culture and weather as swaps, and separately carved state-licensed sportsbooks and casino games out of that definition. Final rules would strengthen exchanges’ federal footing.
A Supreme Court answer
New Jersey has asked the Supreme Court to resolve the split between federal appeals courts over sports event contracts. Any ruling would apply to Polymarket US as much as Kalshi.
What is the Polymarket joining bonus code and sign-up offer for November 2026?
Polymarket has no bonus code to enter and no welcome bonus for new users. Checked by American.Bet on October 30, 2026.
Is Polymarket legal in the US now?
Yes, through its CFTC-regulated QCX exchange, which relaunched to U.S. users in December 2025 and opened its iOS app nationally in May 2026. It is blocked in Nevada, new sports trades are blocked in Michigan, and Ohio has ordered a halt to sports contracts.
Is there a Polymarket promo code?
The U.S. app runs new-user trading credits that change over time. Check the app for the current offer and terms.
Do you need crypto to use Polymarket US?
No. You can fund with a debit card, bank transfer or wire, and USDC transfers are also accepted.
How old do you have to be to use Polymarket?
18+, because Polymarket US is regulated as a financial exchange rather than a sportsbook.
Is Polymarket US the same as the site people used in 2024?
No. Polymarket US (QCX LLC) is a separate, CFTC-regulated entity from the international site, with different markets, liquidity and fees.
Can you withdraw winnings from Polymarket?
Yes. Settled cash can be withdrawn once identity verification is complete. Bonus credits can’t be withdrawn on their own.
