Is sports betting legal in South Dakota?
Yes, in person. Voters approved a constitutional amendment in 2020 allowing sports wagering in Deadwood, and retail sportsbooks opened in September 2021, just before NFL kickoff. Wagers must be placed on the premises of a licensed establishment. You must be 21 or older.
Statewide mobile sportsbooks are not authorized, so DraftKings and FanDuel cannot take sports bets in South Dakota.
Where to bet on sports in South Dakota
- Deadwood: the historic Black Hills gaming town, where licensed casinos run sportsbook counters and kiosks under the South Dakota Commission on Gaming. Sportsbooks can set limits below the $1,000 per-wager cap.
- Dakota Sioux Casino near Watertown and Dakota Connection Casino in Sisseton: Dakota Nation Sportsbook counters and kiosks.
- Prairie Wind Casino in Pine Ridge: in-person, cash-only sports betting.
- Grand River Casino near Mobridge: an on-property sportsbook open 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily.
The state lists nine tribal gaming properties, but only some advertise sportsbooks.
Mobile sports betting: what happened in 2026
South Dakota came close. SJR 504, a resolution to put statewide mobile betting on the ballot, passed the Senate 23-10 on February 11, 2026. On February 25, the House State Affairs Committee rejected a do-pass motion 6-7 and deferred it, so it did not reach the 2026 ballot. The proposal would have directed most mobile tax revenue to property-tax relief. An earlier online betting bill died in a House committee in 2022.

Prediction markets in South Dakota
Kalshi and similar platforms offer event contracts under the federal Commodity Futures Trading Commission rather than state gambling law. Their sports contracts are being challenged by states in several federal courts. See our prediction markets guide.
Popular teams for South Dakota bettors
South Dakota has no major-league franchise, so loyalties split between the Vikings and Twins to the east and the Broncos to the west. College interest centers on the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, an FCS football power in Brookings, and the South Dakota Coyotes in Vermillion. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally fills the Black Hills every August.
Where South Dakotans can bet on mobile
Apps work on where you are, not where you live. If you are 21 or older and cross into a neighboring state with mobile betting, you can register and bet while there:
- Iowa, a short drive from Sioux Falls. See our Iowa sportsbooks guide.
- Wyoming, west of the Black Hills. See our Wyoming sportsbooks guide.
- Colorado and Montana farther afield.
Nebraska is retail only for now, though online betting is on its November 3, 2026 ballot.
Taxes on gambling winnings in South Dakota
South Dakota has no individual income tax, so the state does not tax sportsbook or racing winnings. Federal rules still apply: from the 2026 tax year the W-2G threshold rose to $2,000 and losses became deductible only at 90% of their value, capped at your winnings. Deadwood casinos pay a 9% gaming tax on adjusted gross proceeds.
Responsible gambling in South Dakota
Keep betting in proportion and set limits before you play. South Dakota’s problem gambling helpline is 1-888-781-HELP (4357), and the state says callers can be referred to Gamblers Anonymous groups near their hometown. 1-800-GAMBLER also works nationally. See our responsible gambling guide.
South Dakota gambling in 2027
Mobile betting, round two
SJR 504 passed the Senate in February 2026 before failing 6-7 in House State Affairs. Backers would need a new resolution in the 2027 session to reach the 2028 ballot.
Property-tax pitch
The 2026 plan tied mobile tax revenue to property-tax relief, an argument likely to return as lawmakers weigh how much revenue mobile betting could bring.
Neighbors moving
Nebraska votes on online sports betting on November 3, 2026, with rules due by June 1, 2027 if it passes. A yes there would leave South Dakota surrounded by more mobile markets.
