New Jersey is where legal American sports betting began. The state took its fight all the way to the Supreme Court, won in May 2018, and had retail books taking wagers within weeks: Monmouth Park and Borgata opened that June, with the first online apps following in August. Today the Garden State is the most competitive betting market in the country, with 15 online sportsbook brands reporting to the Division of Gaming Enforcement and the vast majority of wagers placed on a phone. New Jersey bettors wagered $12.23 billion in 2025, $11.72 billion of it online, generating $1.18 billion in sportsbook revenue, per the DGE. Online revenue is taxed at 19.75%.
This page covers every legal NJ sportsbook, the welcome offers from our partners, and the unusual licensing system that decides which apps you can actually use.

Is sports betting legal in New Jersey?
Yes. New Jersey won Murphy v. NCAA at the US Supreme Court in May 2018, striking down the federal ban on single-game sports betting for every state. Gov. Phil Murphy signed the state’s sports wagering law that June, Monmouth Park and Borgata took the first retail bets within days, and the first mobile apps launched in August 2018.
The DGE licenses every sportsbook, approves every app and publishes handle and revenue figures each month.

Hard Rock Bet: ten days of No Sweat Bets
Hard Rock Bet runs under the Hard Rock Atlantic City license and is backed by Seminole Hard Rock Digital, the online arm of the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Hard Rock empire. Its sportsbook and casino share one app and one wallet, so Unity Rewards points carry across both, and the odds boosts are frequent.
The offer: Bet $5, get $500 in No Sweat Bets. New customers 21+ in NJ. First bet $5+. Paid as 10 daily No Sweat tokens worth up to $50 each; bonus bets expire after 7 days, 1x playthrough. Full terms at Hard Rock Bet.
How it works, with an example:
- Place a first bet of $5 or more on anything. Win or lose, that triggers the No Sweat tokens.
- You then get one token a day for 10 days, each covering a bet of up to $50.
- Say on day 3 you put $50 on the Giants at +3 (-110) with that day’s token. If it wins, you’re paid in cash as normal, about $45.45 profit. If it loses, you get a $50 bonus bet, which you must play through once within 7 days.
- Use all ten tokens at the $50 maximum and lose every one, and you’d receive the full $500 in bonus bets. Skip a day and that day’s token is gone.

Betinia: five tokens and casino spins
Betinia is Soft2Bet’s New Jersey brand, launched in 2026 under the Caesars Interactive Entertainment New Jersey license. One account, one wallet and one app cover the sportsbook and Betinia Casino, and the platform layers missions and levels on top of a standard US betting menu.
The offer: Up to $250 in No Sweat Bets + 100 Bonus Spins. New players only. Min. $20 deposit. Five No Sweat Tokens worth up to $50 each. Place qualifying bets of at least $20 at odds of -150 or longer. Losing bets refunded as Bonus Bets, up to $50 each. Tokens expire after 24 hours; Bonus Bets expire after 7 days. Includes 100 Bonus Spins with 30× wagering on winnings. 21+, NJ only.
How it works, with an example:
- Deposit at least $20 to receive five No Sweat tokens. Each token must be used within 24 hours.
- Bet $20 on the Jets moneyline at -150 with a token. If it wins, you collect $13.33 profit plus your stake in cash. If it loses, you get a $20 Bonus Bet, valid for 7 days, which returns only the winnings when it hits.
- Odds must be -150 or longer: a -200 favorite doesn’t qualify, while -150, -110 or +200 do.
- Bet $50 and lose and you get the $50 maximum back. Five tokens at $50 is the “up to $250”.
- The 100 Bonus Spins are for Betinia Casino; anything they win must be wagered 30 times.

Which New Jersey sportsbook is best for whom

Partner offers in this table are subject to the full terms listed above.
How New Jersey sports betting works
NJ uses a “market access” model: only Atlantic City casinos and the state’s racetracks can hold a sports wagering license, and each license can carry several online brands. Every app you use is therefore tethered to a land-based partner (FanDuel to the Meadowlands, bet365 and Hard Rock Bet to Hard Rock, Betinia to Caesars, and so on). It’s why some books appear and disappear as those commercial deals change. The system is overseen by the DGE, widely regarded as the gold-standard US gaming regulator.
How to find the best betting site in New Jersey
No single app is best for every New Jersey bettor; the right one depends on what and how you bet. Start with price: a half-point better on a New Jersey spread beats almost any sign-up bonus over a season, so compare the odds on the markets you bet most. Then judge the app on use, not looks: stability at kickoff, New Jersey withdrawal speed and bonus terms you can actually meet. Holding a second New Jersey account to compare lines is the simplest edge available.
NJ sportsbook promos explained
NJ welcome offers come in a few shapes: “bet-and-get” deals (place a qualifying first bet, receive bonus bets), No Sweat or second-chance bets (lose a covered wager, get it back as bonus bets), and multi-day token packages like Hard Rock Bet’s ten daily tokens. The headline number matters less than the terms: check the minimum odds (Betinia’s tokens need -150 or longer), the play-through and the expiry window (24 hours for Betinia tokens, 7 days for both partners’ bonus bets) before opting in. Neither partner offer needs a Promo Code; both apply through the links on this page.
What you can bet on in New Jersey
Every major US and international league is covered: NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, soccer, tennis, golf, MMA and motorsport, with moneylines, spreads, totals, parlays, same-game parlays, futures, player props and live in-play markets. The one firm restriction: you cannot bet on any New Jersey college team (such as Rutgers or Seton Hall), nor on any college event held in the state, and in-state college player props are off-limits. Voters rejected a 2021 ballot question that would have loosened the rule.
Bet on the Giants, Jets and Devils
Locally, New Jersey betting tends to revolve around the Giants and Jets, who play at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, and the Devils at Prudential Center in Newark. MetLife was also the venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. The national calendar fills in the rest for New Jersey bettors, from the Super Bowl and March Madness to the NBA Finals, the World Series, the golf majors and the Grand Slams.
Deposits, payouts and taxes on NJ betting winnings
Licensed apps take online banking, debit cards, PayPal, Venmo, Play+ and cash at the partner casino’s cage. Betinia’s welcome offer needs a $20 deposit; Hard Rock Bet’s first qualifying bet is $5. Your first withdrawal triggers a one-time identity check.
Winnings are taxable income under New Jersey’s gross income tax and federal tax. Keep your own records; the operator’s annual statement helps.
NJ betting apps and geolocation
All of the books above offer iOS and Android apps, and all use geolocation to confirm you are inside New Jersey before each bet. You can create and fund an account from anywhere, but you must be in-state to wager. Commuters take note: on the Hudson River crossings and near the Delaware River, the app may read your location as New York or Pennsylvania and block the bet until you’re clearly back in NJ.
Responsible betting in New Jersey
Every operator on this page is licensed and audited by the DGE, ring-fences customer funds and offers deposit, time and self-exclusion limits, the reasons to stay with regulated NJ books rather than offshore sites. Betting should stay entertainment; if it stops being fun, set a limit or step away. The DGE keeps a statewide self-exclusion list, and confidential help is available 24/7 in New Jersey at 1-800-GAMBLER.
How to check whether a New Jersey sportsbook is legal
Check a New Jersey betting app’s license before you hand over card details. A licensed New Jersey book shows its DGE approval in the app or site footer, makes you verify that you’re 21 or older, and runs a geolocation check to confirm you’re physically in New Jersey before each bet. If a site takes crypto only, claims you need no ID, or is licensed offshore, it is not regulated in New Jersey, and you would have no protection if a payout went wrong. Every New Jersey book listed above clears that bar.
New Jersey sports betting in 2027
A softer handle line
Handle through September 2026 was down 4.1% at about $8.30 billion, and sports revenue was down 6.3%, per the DGE. The 2027 season will show whether that was a blip or the start of a plateau in a mature market.
Two years at 19.75%
Online sports revenue has been taxed at 19.75% since July 2025. Watch how operators adjust promotions, and whether any brands exit, as they plan 2027 budgets.
New brands on old licenses
Betinia’s 2026 arrival under Caesars Interactive NJ showed the license model still has room for newcomers. Expect further partnerships to need DGE approval but no new legislation.
What is the best sportsbook in New Jersey?
It depends how you bet. Hard Rock Bet has the longest welcome runway (ten daily No Sweat tokens), Betinia suits smaller bets, FanDuel leads the market on revenue, and bet365 is strong in-play. Holding two lets you shop the line.
How does Hard Rock Bet's No Sweat offer work in NJ?
Place a first bet of $5 or more, then get one No Sweat token a day for 10 days, each covering a bet up to $50. A losing token bet returns a bonus bet that expires in 7 days and has a 1x playthrough.
How many sportsbooks are legal in New Jersey?
The DGE’s September 2026 report lists 15 online sportsbook brands, each tied to an Atlantic City casino or racetrack.
Can I use a New Jersey betting app if I live in New York?
Yes. You can register from anywhere, but you must be physically inside New Jersey when you place each bet.
Can I bet on Rutgers or Seton Hall?
No. New Jersey bars wagering on in-state college teams and on any college event played in the state, including player props for in-state athletes.
Do I pay tax on sports betting winnings in New Jersey?
Yes. Winnings count as income under New Jersey’s gross income tax and are also subject to federal tax.
